In the Alegria municipality, the population lives mostly off of subsistence farming. They rarely have access to cash payments – only when they work for another farmer or if they sell part of their crops. It is therefore very difficult for many to cope with a number of expenses, in particular school-related costs for their children.
For most of the families in our Alegria program, a situation requiring financial resources (illness of a family member, expensive school requirements, transportation, house repair) could easily turn into a financial emergency forcing the family to sell their livestock and agricultural produce at a lower price and further adding to their economic volatility.
The objectif is to equip the 10 participants with the resources (knowledge, materials, capital) to start in the poultry business, to ensure profit for the beneficiaries from sales of their poultry and to equip participants with the financial skills in handling a micro-business and (implementing a savings plan.
The outcome is that all of the participants of the project will have a source of additional income equal to at least 10% of their annual income.
