Actions in Cambodia

Despite considerable progress in reducing poverty, Cambodia remains one of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia, with 18% of its population living below the poverty line in 2012, or $3.10 per day (source : World Bank). According to the UNDP (United Nations Development Program), 40% of the rural population lives in a context of multidimensional poverty. Children are the first victims of this poverty.

The number of children out-of-school in Cambodia has increased during the last few years: 190,000 children are out-of-school.

The three homes managed by Enfants d’Asie:

Borey Komar: the Borey Komar center in Phnom Penh takes in some 50 children and young people who have been orphaned or referred by social services. Directly managed by Enfants d’Asie, this home provides a structured and fulfilling environment for the children, improving their living and learning conditions. This secure environment enables them to attend school on a long-term basis, with a view to their social integration. In addition, cultural and sporting activities are organized every week, as well as medical follow-up.

Borey Niseth: Located in Phnom Penh, this center provides a structured living environment for some sixty underprivileged students, enabling them to pursue their studies. Students can take part in technical, vocational and higher education courses at the Training Center. The decent accommodation offered to students enables them to flourish, improving their success rate, graduation and professional integration.

Smong: some thirty children and teenagers are cared for at Smong, a center in the south of the country run by Enfants d’Asie. The home provides a structured environment in which they can grow up to become autonomous, responsible adults.

Supporting children in their families

Enfants d’Asie supports over 500 disadvantaged youngsters living with their families in rural and peri-urban areas of Cambodia. Through this program, Enfants d’Asie intervenes through education, while enabling these children to remain within a family structure. This educational support takes the form of school supplies, basic necessities and tutoring. The association also provides medical follow-up and social and psychosocial support from social workers.

State orphanages

Run by the state, these orphanages take in children who have been orphaned or whose families can no longer care for them. As part of our action, Enfants d’Asie finances the care, support and education of 200 children through the financial support of 5 state-run orphanages in the country.
